VIDES ALS for OSY
(Volunteers International for Development, Education and Services
Alternative Learning System for Out of School Youth)
Last October 2010, we launched the VIDES Busina Mo, Dunong Ko for the Alternative Learning System program in Pasay. In November, we started with ten (10) o...ut-of-school youth being tutored daily by our VIDES teacher. In December, the children underwent leveling tests in partnership with Don Bosco School - Manila under their Reach-Ed ALS Program.
Today, we already have thirty-five (35) VIDES out-of-school youth coming from Bgy 143 of Pasay and Bgy 286 of Delpan attending the daily ALS Classes at Don Bosco School - Manila from 3:00 PM until 7:30 PM. Subjects include Science, English, and Mathematics. Our goal is to enable these children to complete the modules under the ALS Program of the Department of Education in less than one year. After passing the examinations, they will be given and Elementary Diploma which will enable them to proceed to High School or to the ALS Secondary Course program.
These at-risk working children, ages 12 to 16, were deprived of elementary education due to neglect, abuse, malnutrition, and poverty. If they will not be part of the VIDES ALS program, they would be working as barkers, scavengers, stevedores and they would be engaged in gambling and solvent-sniffing.
To help them realize their dreams of pursuing their elementary education, VIDES provides them with meals, uniforms, bags, school supplies and transportation. For all of these items, the monthly cost of sending one ALS child under this program is Php 700.
